NYC Streets are Going Car-Free for Earth Day!
NYC Department of Transportation is hosting car-free Earth Day across all five boroughs from 10 am to 4 pm on April 25th.
Get ready to ditch the wheel and embrace the bikes. On Saturday, April 25, NYC’s streets are going car-free for Earth Day!
As part of its annual celebration, NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) is clearing the roads from 10 am to 4 pm. Launched in 2016 with a focus on Manhattan, the car free tradition has now expanded to all five boroughs. Over 50 streets and plazas will fully become pedestrian friendly with art displays, live music, and activities related to environmental education!
.“Transportation is the second biggest source of carbon emissions in New York City, and finding ways to make clean transportation options quicker, easier, and more affordable is key. We encourage all New Yorkers to come out to enjoy temporary public art, programming, music, and other activities at dozens of car-free streets around New York City.” said NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn.
Major locations include Broadway from 17th to 46th Street in Manhattan, a long stretch through Flatiron and NoMad, St. Nicholas Avenue in Washington Heights, and Dyckman Street near Inwood Hill Park. In Brooklyn, Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park. In Queens, Woodside Avenue. In the Bronx, East 188th Street. And on Staten Island, Port Richmond Avenue.
Thanks to a partnership with Lyft, Citi Bike is offering unlimited 30-minute rides on classic Citi Bikes for 24 hours on April 25. All riders can take advantage of the promotion, making it easier than ever to trek around the city without worrying about parking, traffic, or emissions.
The event is fully free and open to the public encouraging every New Yorker to participate in a greener, happier, and more walkable New York City!
