A man has been charged for a seemingly random Sept. 13 attack on a senior citizen walking her dog on the Upper West Side, which left her unconscious and seriously injured. Hansel Esparragoza, aged 37 and a resident of Staten Island, was given assault raps by the authorities on October 3.

Esparragoza allegedly passed the woman from behind as she was walking in the vicinity of Amsterdam Ave. and W. 66th St., police said, before turning around to sucker-punch her in the face. She was knocked her to the pavement and lost consciousness. He then allegedly fled on foot. The woman was rushed to Mount Sinai West in “stable but critical condition,” the NYPD added. She suffered bruising and a concussion.

The entire September assault was caught on a nearby surveillance camera. Police say that Esparragoza, who has a history of homelessness, has 21 prior arrests. He was cuffed last March for reportedly harassing an 11 year-old girl in the St. George Ferry Terminal, the Staten Island terminus of the Staten Island Ferry, by grabbing and kissing her hand. The girl’s mother reportedly confronted him, which went viral online.
