Trash Bins Installed

Councilman Corey Johnson and others this week unveiled the first of dozens of new wastebaskets slated for installation in the Greenwich Village, West Village, Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen neighborhoods.

The high-volume trashcans are part of the “Cleanup NYC Initiative,” implemented in partnership with the city’s Department of Sanitation. Johnson was joined by department Commissioner Kathryn Garcia and District 3 residents.

Johnson, pictured above with Garcia, secured and allocated $95,921 to pay for the 58 new bins as well as to institute increased trash pickups along 10 corridors within the district since last summer. The recently passed city budget will increase funding to about $153,000 over the next fiscal year.

“With all that our district has to offer, we have an extraordinary amount of foot traffic, and it creates an enormous burden on our sanitation services,” Johnson said. “This initiative is going to help keep that increased demand in check.”
