Levain Bakery — 167 West 74th StreetThe owners of this well-loved, independent Upper West Side bakery, Connie McDonald and Pam Weekes, met while swimming competitively at the YWCA. When Connie arrived at the Y not knowing a soul, Pam warmly invited her to join her group. At the time, Connie worked in investment banking and Pam had a job in fashion at Norma Kamali. The two women, who had become fast friends, decided to train together for an Ironman. The constant physical strain left them very hungry, inspiring them to talk about opening a bakery. The lines go down the block on weekends.
