Jet Boys Fly

Long, long ago (about three or four years), Mofo was the center of the city's nightlife. Every holiday weekend or so, scores of barely legal boys and girls-the usual crowd at Justine D's Saturday night Tiswas at Don Hill's-would flock to the party's new venue to play around in a fantasized version of Disco 2000 fabulousness.

These kids grew up, moved out of their Tribeca digs and found a cozy niche for themselves in a little dive bar in the West Village, where a new generation of hip twinks and twinkettes twirled around in their little polysexual simulacrum of Mofo lineage before moving back to Don Hill's.

On Feb. 19, Avalon saw an unprecedented (for hipsters) multi-generational confluence at the Mofo party, which headlined the New York Dolls as its live act. It was endearing to see so many individuals, representing the different epochs of the downtown scene-from the truly geriatric and the barely geriatric (including some bubble-gum fashion designers) to the Misshapes-adoring 16-year-old love gods and goddesses-all chanting and clapping along to classics such as "Jet Boy."

The Dolls were spectacular, sounding even better than in their two classic recordings; Sylvain and front-man David Johansen have had 30-plus years to become real, accomplished musicians, and the new members of the band are professionals on top of their game-the true Downtown legends. Viva Avalon!
