ITS EASY TO read a porn stars biography Its ...
But you wouldn't know that from the local media. New York magazine was oblivious enough to put Jenna Jameson on the cover of a recent issue dedicated to sex. Savanna didn't mind. She is, however, slightly baffled after she interrupts breakfast at Pigalle to do a phone interview with morning DJs in Chicago.
"They asked me lots of questions about opera," she explains. "I think they were testing me."
The joke's on the jocks, since Savanna knows a lot about opera, too. You can believe a lot of things in Savanna's official bio from Vivid Entertainment?including the hype about her screen skills. She's been nominated for Performer of the Year at the upcoming Adult Video News Awards, as well as Best Actress for Looking In and Good Time Girl.
There is, however, one big lie in her Vivid biography. "I'd like to have a yellow Ferrari," she explains, "but I don't. You'll have to see my Toyota Celica that I drive. My beautiful silver Celica that I keep in a garage... I'll get it back, and there'll be footprints on the hood because they park the cars so close together."
Porn stars in L.A. don't have that problem.
Savanna's also a pretty good actress. That's how she got the lead in Vivid's upcoming remake of The Devil in Miss Jones. It's been a rush to stardom since the former Scores dancer sent a fan note to European stud Rocco Sifreddi, leading to the 2000 production of Rocco Meats an American Angel in Paris: "It was supposed to be this foreign thing where I could live out my fantasy and no one would ever know. But?I got porn fever."
Fortunately, so has the country. Savanna's a contributor to the upcoming ReganBooks release How to Have a XXX Sex Life: Vivid's Guide to Passion and Pleasure. You can also follow her adventures in the first issue of Vivid Comix coming out in January. She's gone international, too, just off a trip from an awards show to Japan.
"I was thrilled to be there," she says, "but all the movies that won the awards were really violent. They had this award for kind of the Worst Movie, which was a rape movie. Then the award for Best Picture was another rape movie. They're going to start introducing Vivid there, though, so I'm thrilled. Here, I'm a dime a dozen. To them, I'm exotic."
Savanna's also unique in that she isn't your typical L.A.-addled porn star making the scene with tattooed rock stars. "I went through the whole party thing when I was younger. I'm still wild at heart, but I don't understand these girls today. They're on prescription drugs, you know? I was in Miami, and this girl took nine Vicodin. I can understand taking a muscle relaxant for an anal scene, but these girls are going crazy."
That's only a reminder of how the porn industry is rapidly resembling mainstream showbiz. Savanna's refreshingly free of mainstream aspirations, though, perhaps because she's aware of an obvious trend: "I'm flipping through the channels and there's this porno on?and it turns out to be Halle Barry in Monster's Ball. She's doing softcore, nothing that different than what we do for Playboy. And look at Paris Hilton. Jenna thinks it's going to make her more interesting. But I'm hearing about this and thinking, you know, wait a minute?that's my job."
Despite the competition from socialites, there are still perks to being based in New York. Savanna's a regular presence on Late Show with David Letterman whenever they need a hot blonde for a sketch. She's also a reliable contact when the national news organizations need an articulate adult entertainer. On the other hand, Savanna has to deal with dressing sexy for an interview on a freezing December day.
"Well," she laughs, "that's what thigh-high boots are for. It's not hard to find me in sweatpants and covering my hair with a big hat. A lot of the time, I'm just a wife and mom running around the city. But if I'm wearing my Vivid necklace, I'll be looking like a Vivid Girl."
