Crushed Glass
Since July of 2002, when the city suspended glass recycling, heaps, hills, mountains, pyramids of glass beverage containers-yes, Snapple, we're glaring at you-have darkened the city's streets and turned them into mine fields of jagged shards.
In less than a month, all that should change. Mayor Bloomberg and Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty announced last week that starting April 1, the city will resume recycling glass and return to weekly recycling collections. Don't expect the trashcans to stop overflowing anytime soon, but it's a start. It's also a lot of nickels for a lot of unemployed people.
