De La Rosa has represented the Northern Manhattan district since 2022, and pulled in a commanding 87 percent of the vote.
Carmen De La Rosa has won re-election to City Council’s District 10, which encompasses Northern Manhattan neighborhoods including Inwood and Washington Heights
De La Rosa pulled in 87 percent of the vote against her Republican opponent, Louisa Flores, who got 10.4 percent. A Unity Party candidate, Francesca Castellanos, got 2.6 percent of the vote.
De La Rosa, who emigrated to NYC from the Dominican Republic when she was young and grew up in Inwood, is part of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
De La Rosa, who is chair of the City Council Labor Committee, has recently recieved attention for her advocacy on behalf of the Daily News Union. She was the lead co-sponsor of the so-called “Too Tough to Die” resolution, which called on the Daily News’s owner, Alden Global Capital, to negotiate in good faith. Remarkably, soon after the resolution passed, the union and Alden reached a tentative contract deal.
According to City & State, De La Rosa initially sought to mount a bid to become City Council speaker—a race that is heating up—before endorsing Crystal Hudson, a progressive Brooklyn City Council member, instead. She would have served as the left-wing foil to Upper East Side Council Member Julie Menin, who is seen as the front-runner of the Democratic Party’s moderate wing’s bid for the role.
