By all accounts, famed baker Giuseppe Generoso had no direct ties to the underworld, even though police surveillance has revealed that his bakeries were popular mob hangouts.

But so what? So mobsters enjoyed his breads and his little cakes. So did a lot of other people. We saw Cousin Brucie at Umberto's Clam House once-does that make him a racketeer?

Still, it does seem odd that two men clearly familiar with Generoso's schedule would wait outside his S.I. home early Tuesday, then neatly gun him down the moment he walked out the door at 4 a.m. It doesn't sound like the work of some punk kid who was after the baker's wallet. But hey-we don't know nothin'.

Then again, you'd think that professional mob hit men would do a much better job. After being shot in the face and arm, Generoso was still able to drive himself to the hospital. He should make a full recovery-especially with the police protection he's receiving.

By Friday, cops were still looking for two men driving a dark SUV (which should narrow their search considerably). They'd also come to the conclusion, according to the Post, that maybe he did have a mafia tie or two. But again, we don't know nothin'.
