City Council member Shaun Abreu has soared to re-election in District 7, which encompasses part of the Upper West Side and neighborhoods including Morningside Heights, West Harlem, Manhattan Valley, Manhattanville, Hamilton Heights, and Washington Heights. He has represented the area since 2021.

Abreu pulled in more than 80 percent of the vote against his Republican opponent, Manual Williams, who netted 14 percent. An independent candidate, Edafe Okporo, netted 4.4 percent of the vote.

Abreu acknowledged his victory on social media: “When we fight, WE WIN! Upper Manhattan made it clear: We’re standing up for cleaner streets, affordable housing, great schools, and a community where every family can thrive. I will keep fighting for our community every day!”

In a pre-election Q/A with The Spirit, Abreu outlined his priorities for his second term in office: threading the needle on the Bloomingdale Library makeover to ensure adequate affordable housing construction, pushing back against federal funding cuts and ICE raids, and advocating for public safety.
