Rep. Dan Goldman focuses on Israel after losing to Lander

A few hundred voters, staffers, and volunteers gathered inside the Mezzanine, a rather roomy, well-lit event space on Wall Street, in support of incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman. The diverse and majority youthful crowd enjoyed a catered buffet, serving both kosher and non-kosher options, and an open bar while awaiting the outcome of N.Y.-10.
Supporters were cautiously confident Tuesday night, knowing that Brad Lander, Goldman’s opponent, had received a crucial endorsement from Mayor Mamdani and the DSA party.
Despite the anxiety in the air, most attendees shifted their focus to the recent headlines surrounding Poetica Cafe and their banning of Rep. Goldman after he was spotted at the cafe on June 22nd by the owner.
The owner put out a statement on Instagram threatening the congressman, “Hey @repdangoldman, we see that you stopped by our shop today for a coffee. Do you see how it doesn’t taste like genocide juice?” The Poetica social media post stated. ”Here at Poetica, we don’t serve racists, fascists, homophobes, genocide enablers, or anyone in between. Too bad we didn’t recognize you right away, or we would have turned you away.”
Many of Goldman's supporters at the watch party expressed their concerns with the rise of antisemitism and “jew-hatred”.
At 9:30 p.m., it was apparent that Rep. Goldman would be denied his third term in Congress with Lander’s 55,060 votes (65.8%) to Goldman’s 28,445 (34%). Supporters gathered around the podium to listen to what the Congressman had to say.
“Tonight, the voters of New York’s 10th Congressional District have spoken, and while this is certainly not the outcome I hoped for and worked so hard for, I respect their decision,” said Goldman.
However disappointing the outcome was for his campaign, in his speech, Goldman rallied behind the core “democratic values,” expressing that the party “is at its strongest when it has welcomed a broad coalition of voices.”
After his speech, Goldman shared with the press that Lander and the media used Israel and its government as wedge points and were an unnecessary focal point during the race. “We have to be very careful not to turn this issue into a litmus test,” said Goldman. “What I am most concerned about is that it is clearly veering from opposition to what another government is doing into outright antisemitism.”
Goldman went on to explain that the democratic party should realise, similar to their stance on the President, “we do not conflate Donald Trump with the United States of America. The Israeli government is very similar.”
