A Tale of Two Eighth Ave. Stabbings: One Man and One Woman Indicted
The “Strip of Despair” lives up to its name.
The “Strip of Despair”—a.k.a. Eighth Avenue from the upper 20s through at least 50th Street—continues to live up to its reputation as a place where homelessness, drug abuse, and “random” violence are commonplace. In the plain language of NYPD reports:
On Tuesday, Oct. 14, at approximately 10:45 p.m. at the northwest corner of Eighth Avenue and West 49th Street, within the confines of the Midtown North Precinct, an unknown male walked up to a 46-year-old male victim and stabbed him in the side of his back on the left side, causing an injury, before fleeing the location.
The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital for medical treatment. There are no arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.
“He just came and hit me [on] my back,” the victim, a Turkish immigrant living in New Jersey, told the New York Post in a phone interview. “It was a homeless guy. He hit me and I just crossed the street. I tried to stay away from him and I saw the blood and called 911 right away.
“This could happen to anyone. I just passed there,” he said. “I lived in Istanbul. I lived in Izmir. I never noticed anything like this. It’s crazy.”
The suspect was described as having a dark complexion, 6 feet tall, and last seen wearing a beige shirt, black pants, and white sneakers.
This description proved accurate, as on Oct. 16, cops arrested Immanuel Patterson, 26-year-old male, of 3600 Jerome Ave.—which is a men’s homeless shelter in the Bronx.
Patterson is being held without bail on Rikers Island on multiple charges, including felony assault. Department of Correction records describe him as a Black male, 6 feet, 180 pounds.
Patterson’s indictment in Manhattan Supreme Court was expected as this issue went to press.
Woman Indicted for Port Authority Bus Terminal Stabbing
Angelle Thompson, 36, the woman alleged to have stabbed a Greyhound bus employee at the Port Authority Bus Terminal on Sept. 22, has been indicted.
“As alleged, Angelle Thompson viciously stabbed a hardworking employee who was just doing her job,” said Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. “We will not tolerate acts of violence committed against workers and commuters who use Manhattan’s transit hubs. I wish the victim a full recovery as she continues to heal from this horrific attack.”
Thomson, who got into an argument with a ticket agent and stabbed her multiple times, is charged with 2nd Degree Attempted Murder and 1st and 2nd Degree Assault.
“That’s crazy,” Lakira Boston, a childhood friend of the victim, told the New York Post. “She’s not problematic. Honestly, I’ve seen people arguing and she defused the situation. She is definitely a peacemaker in my eyes.
“Whatever it is, it shouldn’t have come to this,” Boston, 42, added. “I know [the victim] since she was 5 years old. She’s a beautiful girl.”
Department of Correction records describe Thompson as a Black female, 5-foot-7, 178 pounds. She is being held on Rikers Island on $75,000 bail or $150,000 bond. Her next scheduled court date is Dec. 3.
