The French Embassy-Villa Albertine’s annual French film festival in New York City parks will be screening movies from June to September. This year, the festival’s theme is from “From Page to Screen” — highlighting 12 diverse literary adaptations. The films will be shown at nine different NYC parks, including seven in Manhattan. Attendance is free — just bring your own popcorn!
Tribeca Film Festival

The Tribeca Film Festival has kicked off for a new summer-time stretch of dates for its 21st edition. This year, the features program spans ten categories — narrative competitions, topical documentaries, anticipated new films — and showcases 111 feature films and 16 online premieres from 151 filmmakers across 40 countries. Among the premieres of note will be “Loudmouth”, a documentary capturing the Reverend Al Sharpton’s life as a civil rights activist. To celebrate Juneteenth, the city will be putting on an outdoor screening of the Oscar-winning documentary, “Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised.” Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s documentary tells the story of the Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969 — an event that celebrated Black music, culture and fashion. The screening will be held where the original festival took place in Mount Morris Park, now Marcus Garvey Park. The screening is free and open to all.

One of NYC’s great summer traditions is the free movie screenings at Bryant Park and beyond. This year, you can take in Hollywood classics, summer blockbusters and indie flicks across Manhattan, including locations such as Seaport Cinema, Hudson River Park, Riverside Park, among others. Some of this season’s offerings include “Crazy Rich Asians,” “When Harry Met Sally,” “Moonstruck,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “The Joy Luck Club,” “Coming to America” and many more. All screenings begin at dusk (around 8:30 p.m.).
