Teen ShotA local youth is recovering from a recent handgun assault. At 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 5, a 17-year-old man was shot in the upper left side of his chest by an unknown man wielding a handgun at 201 West 93rd St. The victim was taken to St. Luke’s hospital for treatment. His condition was not released.

Argument Turns ViolentAt one minute after midnight on Tuesday, August 7, a 48-year-old man was having an argument about money with a 47-year-old male acquaintance at 319 West 94th Street. The argument turned violent when one of the men pulled out a ball-peen hammer from his pants pocket and struck the victim on his right elbow, cutting his acquaintance. As police transported the victim to the 24th precinct to take his report, he identified his attacker on the southeast corner of Broadway and West 97th Street. While searching the suspect during his arrest police recovered the hammer and some K2 synthetic marijuana. Robert Bynum was arrested and charged with assault and other offenses.

No SoapApparently, one shoplifter really needed some body soap. At 9:25 p.m. on Thursday, August 9, a man entered the Walgreens store at 2575 Broadway and took soap worth $86 from a shelf without paying. The store’s loss prevention officer tried to stop the perpetrator outside the store, but the man pulled out a box cutter and told the officer to get away from him.

Thugs Prey on TouristThe Big Apple proved less than hospitable to a tourist from Beantown recently. At 7:55 a.m. on Sunday, August 12, a 33-year-old man visiting from Boston was on his way to the hostel where he was staying when he was approached by a 44-year-old man, accompanied by another man, outside 830 Amsterdam Avenue. The man snatched the tourist’s cellphone out of his hands and fled the scene, according to traveler’s account to police. The victim chased both men before the 44-year-old turned around and hit the victim’s right arm with a glass bottle while. The suspected thief, identified by police as Justin Edwards, was later taken into custody at Central Park West and West 103rd Street, while the victim refused medical attention. Edwards was arrested and charged with robbery, assault and other offenses, and police are still seeking his accomplice.
