TWO ARRESTED AFTER MUGGING

Two men were arrested on robbery and other charges following an assault on a 51-year-old man on Manhattan Avenue late on Saturday, June 2, police said. The pair had approached the man asking him for a cigarette. When the older man handed over the smokes, both men began punching him in the face before taking his cellphone and $100 cash, according to police. Officers caught up with pair, however, and arrested Christopher Ruiz and Jarius Smitherman and subsequently charged with robbery, criminal trespass and additional offenses, while the victim was taken to St. Luke’s for treatment.

Marlboro Marauder

June seems to be a hot month for cigarette robberies. At 8:07 a.m. on Sunday, June 3, an individual walked up the cash registers inside the Duane Reade store at 2683 Broadway and asked an employee for a camera. The individual then approached a gate which read, “Employees only” and told the store manager to open the locked gate. The intruder then pushed the manager, walked behind the registers and took three cartons of Marlboro cigarettes. The man then left and jumped into the yellow minivan taxi in which he had arrived.

Officer Assaulted

A young man was arrested after attacking a police officer. At 9:18 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30, and officer investigating a possibly suicidal emotionally disturbed person at Central Park West and West 108th Street, when the man, later identified as Andrew Brent Gomez, 26, punched the officer. When the officer tried to arrest the man, both fell to the ground, and the officer suffered cuts to his left elbow. Gomez was arrested and charged with assault on a police officer and grand larceny.

Bakery Bash

A customer inside a Hot and Crusty Bakery Café could have been described as hot and crabby. At 4:35 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, an unknown individual picked up a food tray inside the bakery located at 2393 Broadway and struck a 40-year-old man on his left forearm and face. The victim refused medical attention after the assault.

Teen Hammer Attack

At 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, an unknown 15-year-old male youth attacked a 13-year-old male youth with a hammer at an unspecified location on Amsterdam Avenue. The assailant, identified by police as Daniel Infante, was found later in the neighborhood, arrested and charged with assault. The victim was taken to St. Luke’s for treatment.
