Bodega bust-ups

Bodegas lately seem to have become the new Wild West saloons in terms of dustups. At 3:28 a.m. on Sunday, July 30, a 22-year-old male employee got into a verbal dispute with a customer in a bodega at 700 Amsterdam Ave. The man asked the customer to leave and threatened to call police, at which the customer began throwing items and knocking down shelves. The employee suffered an injury to his thumb when a shelf fell. The victim suffered only a minor injury and refused medical attention.

At 7:36 p.m. on the same day, another man got into a verbal dispute with the 53-year-old manager of a bodega at 980 Columbus Ave., which resulted in the manager’s striking the man with a broomstick. The man was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment, and Anwar Alokam was arrested and charged with assault.
